Umno MP apologises to Karpal's family

Umno's Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad has finally issued a public apology for his remarks on the passing away of Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh deemed insensitive.

"I would like to express my deep remorse and regret on what transpired the last two days about my posting on my private Facebook account pertaining to a status of what happened to the late YB Karpal Singh.

"Words cannot express how sorry I am, and how necessary it is for me to apologise to the family of the late YB Karpal Singh and everyone, who I have offended due to a needless and careless posting," he said in a statement on his Facebook account this afternoon.

On Thursday, Nawawi had posted on the Facebook a collage of Karpal's bloody body coupled with an old news report quoting him as saying that an Islamic state would only be possible "over my dead body".

The collage was accompanied by a message by Nawawi which read: “Would anyone like to take on Karpal Singh’s challenge? Please give your names. Hehe.”

Karpal, 73, together with his long-time assistant Michael Cornelius Selvam Vallu, 39, perished in a car accident near Kampar, Perak on that day.

Nawawi retracted the Facebook posting three hours later but issued no apology, insisting that the message was not meant for official consumption.

"I feel that Facebook is not official and not serious, so I did not expect what I wrote to become viral," he had told Malaysiakiniwhen asked for clarification.

'I take full responsibility'

Nawawi, who is also Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad chairperson, had also used the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 incident and Karpal's accident as example of why trains were a better option in another posting on Facebook.

However, in his apology today, Nawawi said there were a few administrators in charge of his Facebook page but he took "full responsibility" for what had happened.

The apology comes after Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Joseph Kurup described Nawawi's remarks as well as former BN Shah Alam MP candidate Zulkifli Noordin's as "unacceptable" and "very disappointing".

Zulkifli had on Twitter said Karpal's death was an act of Allah to pave the way for hudud law.

However, he suddenly began singing Karpal's praises after being inundated with heavy criticism from netizens, including Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

No apology has been forthcoming from Zulkifli to date.
