Bekir in tears while testifying on divorce

Former Sarawak chief minister's son Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, testified at the Kuala Lumpur Syariah High Court that he only filed for divorce against his former wife Shahnaz A Majid after 12 years, because he did not want to see her live alone.

“I did not want to see her living alone and do not have any husband when I did not return home (to Damansara),” he said in testifying over her former wife's RM100 million mutaah (gift) claim.

He stopped his testimony in court after saying this, as he found it hard to control his tears.

On June 3, he testified that he married Shahnaz (right) on Jan 9, 1992, and they divorced on May 11, 2011.

They have lived apart since 1999 as she was allegedly highly jealous and had even tried to scratch him. Despite this, Mahmud said he had bought her a bungalow, gave her three cars, and supported her financially while they were living apart.

Mahmud also told the court that he bought his son, Raden Murya, a Ferrari car, when he was eight years old.

"Since he was small, he was interested in the Ferrari so I bought it for him."

During examination in chief by his counsel Zainur Rijal Abu Bakar, he said that he initially bought the car under his name and later transferred ownership to his son when he turned 18.
