DAP's Bukit Assek state assemblyperson Wong Ho Leng has passed away after battling brain cancer for more than a year. He was 54 years old.
Wong passed away in Sibu at around 11 last night and is survived by his five children. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in December 2012.
He was best known for wresting the Sibu parliamentary seat from BN in the 2010 by-election.
However, he sat out of the 13th General Election after discovering of his illness but remained as a state assemblyperson for Bukit Assek, which he was the elected representive at the 2011 state election.
Sarawak is the only state where its election is not concurrent with the parliamentary elections.
Wong has been in coma since February this year and had been receiving treatment in Singapore.
Wong's death came just a day after three years from the Sarawak state legislative assembly's first sitting on June 20, 2011.
No by-election is required after the three-year period.
