Gov't paying for UiTM Sarawak, despite privatisation

The federal government is still paying for the construction of a new UiTM campus in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, albeit indirectly, despite having privatised the construction to a concession company, PKR said today.

Party strategy director Rafizi Ramli revealed today that despite handing the concession to Rekajaya Projek Sdn Bhd, the finance for the construction still comes from a government-owned development bank, rendering the whole privatisation exercise redundant.

Rafizi said the actual construction has been sub-contracted to a private company, Binapuri Holdings, which is a non-bumiputera construction company.

"If that is the case, the government could have opened up a tender process and Binapuri could have bid for it directly," Rafizi told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

The entire privatisation exercise for six new UiTM campuses had seen the final concession cost shoot up to four times higher than the original cost, had the government itself financed it, he added.
