Barely a week ago, the Health Ministry announced that porcine DNA were found in two brands of Cadbury Chocolates namely the Hazelnut and Roast Almond packs. Although tests were conducted since February 2014, the ‘leak’ only came to light recently.
The news reverberated throughout the country with many Muslims reeling in shock. Although, there are more serious ‘haram’ (forbidden acts) like corruption and graft, bribery, smoking, drinking, gambling or engaging in illicit sex, which are largely ignored and shrugged off, pork consumption remains a ‘taboo’ to Muslims in this nation.
So, news that Muslims had unknowingly been consuming porcine DNA tainted chocolates is not only unnerving, but has rattled the faith of many.
A Jihad on Cadbury
And true enough but not surprisingly, the same radical and extreme NGO’s rose to the occasion in murderous rage screaming expletives and condemning the confectionary giant. There were calls and threats to burn the Cadbury factory down.
The same coalition of Muslim NGO’s have bandied together threatening to sue Cadbury for RM100 million, while arguing that the amount would hardly be enough to compensate Muslims, who must undergo massive blood transfusions to rid themselves of these alien DNA.
A Muslim Consumer Groups chairperson has called for a Jihad and a total boycott of Cadbury and its related products and that of its parent company Mondelez International. Citing that other products produced by the Confectionary Giant may also be tainted with porcine DNA, they have called for the removal of all related products from the shelves of stores nationwide.
Screaming and hollering at the top of their voices, they lament of being forcibly poisoned by porcine DNA by unscrupulous companies in a grand conspiracy to make them weak and stupid, and attributing the disunity of Muslims in this country to porcine DNA. If his statement has any element of truth, then the contamination by porcine DNA in other products may have exceeded dangerous levels, as many Muslims are equally divided between PKR, PAS and UMNO.
JAKIM to the rescue
Sensing that this frivolous issue and situation is running out of control, JAKIM has taken steps to mitigate the tense situation.
In an about turn, JAKIM came forward today to announce that Cadbury chocolate has been declared ‘halal’ for consumption as subsequent tests have found that none of the chocolates tested so far contain any traces of porcine DNA. It has also declared that Cadbury never contained any traces of porcine DNA based on 11 samples taken.
JAKIM officials were so confident with their findings that they were willing to eat these chocolates in public to prove that Cadbury chocolates are totally porcine DNA free, and therefore fit for Muslim consumption. JAKIM is the official certifier for Halal products in this country and if Malaysian Muslims cannot trust JAKIM, who else can they trust?
Smacking of sabotage
But the speed at which JAKIM has declared the Halalness of these chocolates, in contrast to the Health Ministry’s delayed findings, are leading many to speculate that Cadbury may have been sabotaged. Theories abound of hungry and greedy GLC’s waiting in line to snap up Cadbury for a song before it goes under.
Another theory being floated is that, Cadbury’s decision to discontinue the use of palm oil in their confectionary production citing potential damage to rain forests and Orang Utans in the country may have caused certain parties to retaliate.
But whatever it is, this fire has grown seriously out of control and starting to spread across the globe. One day its flames will devour and consume the very ones that lit the fire.
An act of economic terrorism
The damage is however irreversible, as most Muslims in the country would naturally shun these chocolate beautifully wrapped up in blue. No Muslims would want to be seen carrying bars of Cadbury chocolates if there are so many other brands to choose from or take the chance that there will be no more porcine DNA tainted chocolates on the shelves.
Muslims would also not care to remember the specific batch numbers or shelf life to check meticulously for tainted chocolates.
Cadbury’s aggressive chocolate campaign with colourful advertisements on television and other media has attracted a faithful band of loyal Cadbury consumers with everyone recalling the vision of these chocolates hanging on balloons floating towards their loved ones in the next building.
Cadbury Malaysia is set to incur untold losses on its chocolate products domestically and worldwide for many years to come, before Muslims worldwide forget the picture of pig faces every time they come across Cadbury chocolates. With so many competing brands like Ritter sports and Van Houten, why would any Muslim want to take the risk with Cadbury?
The blame game
Now the blame game has begun, with the Health Ministry investigating the culprit who broke the news. The Deputy Health Minister said that the culprit responsible would be hauled up to face charges and punishment. Apparently, someone’s prank joke has awoken a sleeping giant. And with so many authorities making contradictory statements in the press, many believe that the only person that can be trusted would be the whistle blower himself.
An international scare
News of the contaminated chocolate laced with porcine DNA is spreading like wild fire across the world and to every Muslim country. Indonesia and Saudi Arabia has started conducting independent tests on their own to determine the halalness of these chocolates. Overnight, Cadbury has lost an international Muslim market that is fond of its tasty chocolates.
And yes, this ugly incident has given the entire Muslim World a terrible and frightful scare with the international media highlighting juicy stories of Malaysian radical NGO’s and Consumer Groups screaming of a Jewish conspiracy to contaminate consumer products with porcine DNA to weaken Malaysian Muslims and worldwide. This incident if left unmitigated, may even lead to Muslims worldwide, completely shunning chocolate products forever.
It won’t be long before other radical Muslim Organizations worldwide follows in the footsteps of Perkasa, Isma and other radical Muslim NGO’s and Consumer Groups to seize the opportunity to condemn Cadbury while trying to highlight their religious piety and economic dilemma
This incident has also highlighted to Malaysians, the possibility of many more products that could be tainted with porcine DNA. If a pork free product like chocolates can be tainted, many other consumer products are also at risk. From the water we drink, the rice we eat and to the poultry we consume, may carry minute traces of porcine DNA if our Health Officials dare to dig deeper enough.
An apathetic government
This incident also highlights how ugly and to what extent, these radical NGO’s and Religious Consumer Groups will stoop to unleash their destructive policies in a vain effort to save their political skins.
Cadbury has a joint venture with Boustead – a GLC, while FELDA is a stakeholder in Cadbury. A loss for Cadbury will affect the financial performance of Boustead and Felda. And until this fiasco dies down, Cadbury will probably face massive problems disposing of its stock, which means a premature cut in production or aggressive attempts to export the chocolates worldwide.
If Malaysian Muslims instinctively heeds the call of these dumb Muslim Consumer Groups to boycott all other products manufactured by Cadbury and its parent company on the grounds that other products may be tainted, all hell is going to break loose in this country.
As far as Malaysians are concerned, many people are under the impression that the Malaysian government is running on auto-pilot without any credible leadership, and behaving like as if the government of the day is under siege.
Meanwhile, radical NGO’s and Consumer Groups are given free rein to prance around destroying all the pillars of democracy, equal rights, free speech, race and religious harmony with their poisonous vitriol that were sacrificially honed from 50years of independence.
The BN government has failed to realise that the ridiculous antics of these radical self serving NGO’s are not only making thorough fools of themselves, the religion but also a total mockery of the Government’s 1Malaysia.
All this is happening while the Civil Islamic Authorities are taking the law into their own hands, imposing their will on Muslims and Non Muslims with impunity. The Selangor Bible Raids, banning of religious items in hotels, Church raids and raids on a Hindu Wedding Ceremony are classic examples of an organization gone wild.
The Cadbury Fiasco has opened our eyes to the impotence and indifference of the BN Government and its helplessness to defend open acts of economic terrorism and powerless to control the rise of radical NGO’s and extremists which have made the country a laughing stock in the eyes of the world.
However, on a lighter side, the Hari Raya is coming, but my wife says that this particular chocolate brand is not on her shopping list, at least not until she regains complete trust in the product.
As for me, I will personally not go with the boycott, and if I ever come across some juicy Cadbury chocolates, I will definitely pick one up and relish the creamy and nutty taste of these fine confectionary delicacies in support of Cadbury. Because if Cadbury go bust, many Malaysians are going to lose their jobs in the factory, not forgetting shareholders like Boustead and Felda who will have a lot to lose. - MAILBAG
