'Mais defying law - Khalid must act'

Selangor Islamic Religious Council’s (Mais) insistence on seizing bibles containing the word 'Allah' is in blatant defiance of the attorney-general's (AG) findings, and must be reined in, said a Selangor assemblyperson.

"We ask that MB Abdul Khalid Ibrahim be firm in his duty to reign in the recalcitrant Mais.

"If Mais continues to defy the state government, the AG Chambers and the rule of law, then the menteri besar must act by amending the necessary legislations to neuter the excessive authority of Mais," said Bukit Gasing assemblyperson Rajiv Rishyakaran (right) in a statement last night.

He was responding to Mais chairperson Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa yesterday saying the Islamic authority will continue to seize any bibles in the state that use the banned word.

This despite the AG finding that the bibles seized from the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) earlier this year did not break any law, as it was not used for propagating to Muslims.

To date Mais has not produced any evidence to back their claims that the Malay and Iban bibles could be used to convert Muslims.

State enactment on the banned words such as 'Allah' were put in place nationwide under BN's rule of the respective states, and in Pakatan-led Selangor it is proving a major headache for Khalid's administration.
