Sarawak CM to lift ban so MPs can go to funeral

Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem is lifting a ban of entry on several Pakatan Rakyat MPs into Sarawak, to allow them to attend the funeral of Bukit Assek assemblyperson Wong Ho Leng.

DAP national vice chairperson Teresa Kok, who is among those who have been on the ban list, said that was relayed to her by Adenan's private secretary Mustapa Han.

"It is not clear at this stage whether the lifting of the ban is only temporary and for this specific purpose," Kok (right) said in a statement.

Wong passed away from brain cancer in a Sibu hospital last night.

Kok earlier today called for Adenan to lift the ban to allow Pakatan MPs to pay their last respects.

“The Sarawak chief minister has said on many occasions that his government will practice immigration autonomy and ban religious and racial bigots from entry into Sarawak. But I am baffled why I and my Pakatan colleagues have been banned as we are certainly not religious or racial bigots,” she said this morning.

“I have today faxed a letter to the office of Sarawak chief minister to appeal to him to lift the ban on the Pakatan MPs and I, so that we can attend Wong’s funeral on Tuesday."

Kok said Wong (left) was not just her party comrade, but a close friend and she always admired his principles for justice and fairness in politics, his wit and wisdom, and his good command of English and Chinese languages.

“He will be missed by his DAP comrades. And he will also be remembered for being the first Pakatan Rakyat Sarawak MP when he won in the Sibu parliamentary by-election in 2010, a victory which was described as a “Sibu Miracle”.

Deepest sadness

In Penang, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (below) expressed the party’s deepest sadness over Wong’s death last night, after a long battle with brain cancer.

The DAP secretary-general said the party was pained by his loss as members were “hoping against hope” that somehow Wong would recover after suffering for a year.

“Even though he was ill for some time, we were holding on to the hope (that he would recover) as long as he was still alive, that he would pull through,” said Lim at a press conference today.

“Perhaps, I think the good lord loves him better,” he mused.

Lim extended the party’s condolences to Wong’s family, especially his wife, Irene Chang.

“Nothing we say can replace the loss but we hope what Wong has contributed and sacrificed for the people of Sibu and Sarawak will comfort them, and that he has lived not for himself but for others,” Lim said.

“We are saddened but also proud of what Wong has achieved and this shall be forever remembered by the party,” he added.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has also extended his condolences in a brief tweet, reported Bernama.

"My condolences to the family and friends of the late DAP Sarawak state chairman and Bukit Assek assemblyman Wong Ho Leng who passed away yesterday," said Najib in his Twitter entry.
