Selangor passes Bible buck to AG... again

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said that the state is waiting for a reply from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) on what to do with the bibles seized by the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais).

Khalid said that the state will act as soon as they get a reply from the AGC on the matter.

“On the matter of the Malay-language bibles, we are in the process of implementation and are awaiting a report from the attorney-general. We will act as soon as we get a reply,” he said at a press conference.

Jais seized 321 Malay and Iban-language bibles, which use the word ‘Allah’ to refer to God, from the Bible Society Malaysia (BSM) premises in Petaling Jaya last January.

Attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail earlier this month said the case is closed and there will be no prosecution.

He also advised Selangor Islamic Affairs Council (Mais), which oversees Jais, to deal with the seized holy books “according to the law”.

Khalid then instructed his exco to assist Jais and Mais in returning the holy books, but Mais refused.

The Selangor sultan intervened by advising Jais to allow the court to decide if the holy books should be returned.

No time to talk about MB change

The state's handling of the protracted bible debacle has contributed to the groundswell criticism against the MB, with some calling for his replacement.

Even state executive council member and Selangor PAS commissioner Iskandar Samad(right) urged Pakatan to listen to the people on this issue.

Following this, PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin yesterday said that there is already a "consesus among Pakatan leaders" including a "majority of PAS leaders" to replace Khalid, but the transition takes time.

Asked of this, Khalid, who has said that this will be his last term as MB, declined to comment.

"My executive council (exco) and don't have time to discuss this," he said after chairing the exco meeting at the state secretariat building in Shah Alam.
