DAP: Heads must roll over latest Sabah intrusion

The prime minister should reject explanations given for the latest fatal incursion into Sabah's east coast yesterday, and heads must roll this time said DAP.

"The prime minister’s reaction to the latest incident was most disappointing and will not instil public confidence in Esscom’s (Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) effectiveness.

"In fact, he should reject such explanations and take tough actions on this latest security breach.

"Heads must roll and if a new home minister needs to be appointed, Najib must do it without hesitation and delay," said DAP vice president Teresa Kok (left) in a statement today.

She was responding to Najib saying today that he had been told "there are not enough security personnel at resorts in the area".

"How could the prime minister say that there were not enough security personnel ... and that there were weakness in the security placement and planning on the ground, after Esscom has been set up for more than a year, and after kidnappings have happened in the past year?" asked Kok, who is also Seputeh MP.

On Saturday night, just after Najib announced in Kota Kinabalu that Esscom would be strengthened a group of armed gunmen entered Sabah's east coast.

In the gunfire that ensued, a policeman was killed and another abducted.

Expressing her condolences for the family of the deceased, she said it was "sad that after so many past kidnappings and intrusions as well as assurances by the government that safety in Sabah coastline would be enhanced, the latest incident has happened".

The government's inability to provide effective protection after the set up of Esscom was "shocking", she said.

Najib, she said, had promised at the launch of Esscom "effective coastal surveillance 24-hours a day".

Yet, the latest episode is the fourth since the beginning of the year, with one kidnapping each month over the past three months.

"Such weaknesses and problems ought to have been resolved earlier. Why has the government not learned any lesson?" asked the Seputeh MP.

'Refusal to cooperate with Pakatan'

Meanwhile Penampang MP Darell Leiking blamed the ongoing security problems in the area on the failure of BN leaders to work together with Pakatan Rakyat for a definitive solution.

“One usual statement by them whenever the opposition raises up such issues is that 'the opposition is merely seeking for political mileage' or 'inciting the people to hate BN’.

“Sabahans know it very well that when any BN state leaders asked the opposition leaders to 'work together with them', it basically means, 'shut up and don't publicise our failure'.” he said in a statement yesterday.

Leiking (left) added that if truly the BN leaders wanted cooperation from the opposition in resolving the security issue, they could have set up a joint committee

“They would have set up a special state's security committee a long time ago, which includes the state's oppositions leaders and NGOs to discuss and formulate the best way to solve all the major security problems in the state,” he said.

Leiking said it was not right for younger Sabahan BN leaders to be "dragged into" the failure to secure the Sabah coast, saying the removal of Chief Minister Musa Aman was the only alternative.

“Thousands of Sabahans perceive him as a very sound businessman but lacking patriotism towards the state and unable to match the steely attitude towards the illegal immigrants shown by the former Chief Minister Chong Kah Kiat,” said Leiking.

He said the online campaigns like ‘REMOVE Musa’ and support the Vote of No Confidence against the Chief Minister have not only garnered the support of thousands of Sabahans but irked BN leaders as well.

He challenged if the BN representatives had the "guts" to support thevote of no confidenceagainst the CM that state opposition leader Lajim Ukin plans to table this week.
