Appointing new MB will take time, no point speculating, says Khalid

Embattled Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said today the palace would take time to appoint a new menteri besar, following speculation that state PAS commissioner Iskandar Abdul Samad would be sworn in this Friday.
“We shouldn’t listen (to the rumours). Even if it were to happen, it would have to go through several particular procedures,” Khalid told reporters after chairing a state executive council meeting at the Selangor secretariat building in Shah Alam.
“Usually, Selangor’s tradition is to have a written invitation from the state palace to invite people to attend the ceremony. This will take time, you don’t have to speculate.”
But Iskandar denied this yesterday, as well as reports that he and two other Selangor PAS assemblymen had been invited for an audience with the Selangor Sultan over the position.
Khalid today said he had been advised not to speak on the impending appointment as it could cause confusion.
“(I was told by) the palace, my friends who are not interested in the politics of Selangor, and also by my family (to) leave that issue on its own course,” said Khalid.
“I think we should have faith in the wisdom and patience of the sultan, and I hope that this matter is solved and that we give priority to Selangor’s interests.”
Yesterday, PKR and DAP sought forgiveness from the Sultan of Selangor for offending the state ruler by not abiding by his decree to nominate at least three candidates for the MB post.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said he would discuss the matter further with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, adding that the party had decided to only nominate one candidate after deliberating over it with the PKR de facto chief.
Lim also said that DAP had taken into account the support of the 30 Selangor assemblymen for Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, as well as Pakatan Rakyat’s consensus that the MB would be from PKR.
But in his apology yesterday, Anwar insisted that PKR’s decision to propose a single nominee to the Sultan was in line with the state’s law and convention.
Anwar added that PKR and Pakatan Rakyat stood by the principle of the supremacy of the constitution and upheld the constitutional monarchy and system of parliamentary democracy.
On Monday, the Sultan revealed he was extremely disappointed with the two parties for defying the decree he had made on August 27, 2014.
“DAP and Keadilan's actions reflect their insolence towards the royal institution and are treason towards the Selangor Sultan," said the statement issued by the Sultan's private secretary, Datuk Munir Bani.
It said Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had decreed each party within Pakatan Rakyat to submit more than two names, saying it was the palace's convention on the matter.
"This is to allow him to decide on the future Selangor menteri besar by looking not only at the majority support of the state legislative assembly, but also in terms of the skills, experience, integrity and capabilities of the state assemblyman."
PAS alone had deviated from the PR consensus and submitted three names, two from PKR and one from its own ranks, in a move that strained ties between the allies.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang told a special briefing for the party on Friday that Dr Wan Azizah was not qualified for the post as she did not have the ability to debate questions in parliament or the state assembly.
However, the PAS central committee on Sunday said its assemblymen would reject the MB post if offered by the Sultan.
