KUALA LUMPUR - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak took a swipe at Pakatan Rakyat, saying the coalition pact had tried to copy the Barisan Nasional (BN) "family spirit" without success.
He said the opposition has not been able to forge political understanding and cooperation among its partners, unlike BN.
Najib, who is also BN chairman, said BN has always enjoyed the family spirit, which Pakatan had attempted to imitate.
He added that Pakatan's failure to copy the BN spirit can be seen in the Selangor crisis involving the three parties (DAP, PKR and PAS).
Najib was addressing some 1,000 delegates at the opening of the Malaysian Makkal Sakti Party's (PMSM) annual general meeting in Putra World Trade Centre here today.
"In Selangor, there is a crack in the agreement among the three parties," he said.
(Selangor is in the midst of a political crisis over the appointment of a new mentri besar to replace Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.)
"Be careful: a counterfeit is not as good as the genuine one," he added.
Najib said BN has 13 parties which work together in achieving common goals; this power-sharing arrangement takes into consideration all the views and suggestions of the component parties.
"If there is no such arrangement, many who want to support BN will not be able to do so," he said, adding that he encourages the formation of "BN-friendly" groups.
He pointed out that these friendly groups will be important during elections.
Najib said BN needed the support of all communities as politics is about numbers and thus the party that gets the majority (votes) will form the government.
Earlier, PMSM president Datuk R. S. Thanenthiran tabled a resolution which, among others, called on BN to consider appointing one of PMSM leaders as a deputy minister, allocating RM50 million in funds for community-based activities, and establishing Tamil secondary schools. -Sundaily
