HADI THE DICTATOR: I don't need central committee's OK
MARANG - Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday defended his decision to submit three names to the sultan of Selangor to be considered for the Selangor menteri besar’s post, saying that under the party’s constitution, he has the right to make decisions in certain matters for the party.
Hadi said party members, including the deputy president and vice-presidents, must support the decision.
“We have never referred to the central committee on the appointments of the menteris besar of Kelantan and Terengganu when we came to power in those states.
“In 1990, when we won in Kelantan, it was the party president who decided on the menteri besar candidate. Datuk Fadzil Noor phoned me and the secretary-general to inform us that he had appointed Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat as the menteri besar-designate.
“A letter was then issued and signed by the party president. This was the same when we won Terengganu in 1999. There was no central committee meeting held to choose the person to lead the state.
“The decision in naming the menteri besar candidates was made by the president without consulting the central committee, as the names had to be submitted to the palace quickly,” he said at a dialogue with Terengganu party leaders at his base in Rusila on Friday evening.
Hadi seemed to be replying to a statement by his deputy, Mohammad Sabu, that the party’s central committee had not been informed of the submission of a third name for the Selangor menteri besar’s post, besides PKR president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her deputy, Azmin Ali.
On the list submitted to the sultan, Hadi said the Selangor palace had written separately to Pakatan member parties to request for the names of the candidates and that it was Pas’ right to reply to the letter.
“The names submitted are known only to God and the sultan.”
Hadi said the crisis in Selangor was not Pas’ doing, but that of another Pakatan party, in an apparent reference to PKR.
“We came in to give a helping hand to ensure that the Selangor government continues to function.” -NST
