The Kuala Lumpur sessions court today sentenced a construction-site supervisor to a year in jail for posting offensive comments regarding Hari Raya on his Facebook account.
Chow Mun Fai, 36, pleaded guilty to making the comments which insulted Muslims about Ramadan, The Star reported.
He admitted to using Facebook to post offensive comments to hurt the feelings of others.
Although Chow had been charged under the Sedition Act 1948, he pleaded guilty to an alternate charge under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.
The Star reported that Chow, who was wearing a pink T-shirt and jeans, was seen crying as he was speaking to his mother before the court proceedings.
But, he appeared to have regained his composure almost two hours later when his charges were read out.
DPP Suhaimi Ibrahim urged the court to hand down a heavy sentence.
"The court should show that it will not compromise with any party that believes they can upset religious sensitivities, in the name of absolute freedom of speech."
