KUALA LUMPUR - A former minister said the Prime Minister “must listen” to Datuk Seri Idris Jala who has condemned the sedition charge against a law lecturer.
In what could be deemed as a sarcastic blog post by former Information Minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the former argued, must listen to Idris as he was a “powerful Cabinet Minister, who is highly influential in the financial world”.
Idris was listed on Bloomberg as among the top 50 most influential leaders in corporate banking.
Yesterday, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, tweeted that Universiti Malaya law lecturer Prof Azmi Sharom should not have been charged with sedition as academic freedom was required in the pursuit of knowledge.
Zainuddin said the Umno president should “not mind” the voice of Malays, Muslims or Umno in the wake of pressure to reject the Sedition Act 1948.
He said Najib should not risk jeopardising his popularity due to the pressure which came from the likes of DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, former Bersih co-chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, among others.
The former Utusan Malaysia group editor said Najib must listen to those opposing the Sedition Act to ensure that his popularity among non-Malays and internationally remained intact.
Now all policies including political ones, Zainuddin wrote, must meet the “spirit of globalisation”.
He also said if Najib dared to take action due to pressure, he should be brave enough to retract those actions under similar circumstances as well.
“To hell with all the voices of Malays, Umno, Perkasa, Isma, and Malay NGOs. These are all extremists, bigots, stupid, shallow and not up to Najib’s Western liberalism wavelength.” -http://www.therakyatpost.com
