Green light for sensitive issues at Umno Assembly

There are fears that the Umno General Assembly will degenerate into a free for all inflammatory affair which will further add to the state of tension in the country.
hishamuddinPETALING JAYA: Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein feels that sensitive issues can be raised and discussed at the Umno General Assembly provided that they are done in a calm, rational manner.
In short, he added, there’s no place for inflammatory speeches playing to the gallery.
“Through the Umno General Assembly, we make a collective stand, be it in the context of the Sedition Act, security related issues or education-related matters,” said Hishammuddin after launching Umno’s round table discussion here. “Even if it’s a sensitive issue, people will be able to accept it if it is discussed rationally.”
“Whether or not it can be translated and accepted by parties representing other races or religions remains another issue.”
He was addressing public concerns that the Umno General Assembly will degenerate into a free for all inflammatory affair which will further add to the state of tension in the country.
He stressed that the party had been doing its best not to allow divisions in the country or anything that would affect the multi-racial population including not hurting the sensitivities of the people of different races and beliefs.
Still, he added, the party cannot run away from the issue of one stream schooling, efforts to strengthen the position of national schools, religion and the economic welfare of the Orang Asal and the Malays.
Cheras Umno division chief Syed Ali Al Habshee and Petaling Jaya Utara Umno deputy division chief Mohamad Azli Mohemed Saad openly suggested last month that vernacular schools be scrapped.
They alleged that these schools promote disintegration, disunity, racism and anti-establishment sentiments.
They want the proposal to be discussed during the Umno General Assembly.
In a contradiction in terms, they have also suggested that Malay and Indian students and teachers in Chinese schools be increased up to 60 per cent.
The Umno General Assembly will run from Nov 25 till Nov 29.
