HOW DECEITFUL! Did Najib slap sales tax like GST onto RON95 - Teresa tells Putrajaya to come clean on tiny 4-sen price drop
KUALA LUMPUR - Putrajaya must explain whether it has quietly imposed an additional sales tax on RON95 petrol, a DAP MP asked today after noting that the new managed float pump price of RON95 is not much different from RON97.
According to DAP’s Teresa Kok, the prices of the two fuels only differ by 20 sen, even when RON97 is subjected to a sales tax of 58 sen and RON95 is not.
“If no sales tax has been imposed on RON 95, then why it’s new price effective on Dec 1 is not much lower than that of RON 97?
“If a sales tax has been imposed, why was there no announcement?” asked the Seputeh MP.
Kok pointed out to a statement by former Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in 2012, where the latter claimed that the government only collects sales tax on RON97 petrol and not RON95.
“The government not only gives subsidy for [RON95 petrol], it also forgoes the sales tax. Actually, the government can collect the sales tax, but it does not,” Ismail said in June 2012, as quoted by state news agency Bernama.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan reportedly said on October 31 this year that Putrajaya might collect sales tax on RON95 petrol in the future if its price is lowered.
However, on November 17, he reportedly claimed that he had proposed to the Fiscal Policy Committee that no such tax should be collected.
Kok said since Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Seri Hasan Malek announced on November 21 that RON95 petrol and diesel prices will be set using a managed float system, no announcement has been made whether the sales tax is imposed or not.
“If sales tax , whether imposed or otherwise, is not a main factor why RON95 cannot be priced lower than the announced price of RM 2.26 per litre, Datuk Seri Hasan Malek must explain what are the real factors,” the DAP National Vice-Chairman said.
Starting December 1, the retail price of RON97 petrol was reduced by nine sen per litre to RM2.46 per litre and the retail price of RON95 petrol by four sen per litre to RM2.26 per litre.
The retail price for diesel however had been increased to three sen per litre to RM2.23 per litre. -Malay Mail
