Serve or quit, Speaker tells opposition leader

Hannah Yeoh gives Shamsudin Lias an ultimatum after he rejects the PAC chairmanship.
hannah yeoh samsudin lias2SHAH ALAM: Selangor Speaker Hannah Yeoh today issued an ultimatum to Opposition Leader Mohd Shamsudin Lias to serve as Chairman of the state Public Accounts Committee (PAC) or resign his position in the state assembly.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference at the State Secretariat Building here, Yeoh ticked off Shamsudin for rejecting the post, pointing out that a new amendment to a standing order of the state assembly made it compulsory for the Opposition Leader to chair the committee.
“Umno Selangor has to decide who’ll be its next opposition leader,” Yeoh said.
“Right now, there are special allowances and official cars provided for the Opposition Leader and with all these privileges, comes also the responsibility to serve as chairman of the PAC.
“He can’t just receive benefits and not fulfil his duties and responsibilities.”
Shamsudin’s appointment was announced during the assembly session today. Afterwards, he held a press conference during which he announced his decision to reject the appointment.
He said it would be difficult for him to fulfil the duties required of the position because the opposition was a minority in the committee.
“Let’s say, the Pakatan Rakyat members are absent from a meeting; I then won’t be able to conduct the meeting effectively,” he said.
Referring to that remark, Yeoh pointed out that the legislature had only 12 opposition members. Because there are 10 select committees and there are seven members in each committee, it would be impossible to appoint four from the opposition for every committee, she said.
According to Yeoh, opposition leaders before Shamsudin had also declined the post, but Shamsudin could not do the same and still remain Opposition Leader because of the amendment to the standing order.
“Good practices in Selangor have to be made into law to protect the state in the future,” she said.
Yeoh also pointed out that the new requirement was unprecedented in Malaysia, which she said showed that the Selangor government under Pakatan was committed to making the state a model of democracy.
