Umno is not funding bloggers to become their mouthpiece or attack the opposition, the party's secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said today.
"We never pay anyone," he said when asked to comment on the request by PAS information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar for Umno to reveal how much the party was spending to employ bloggers to attack the opposition.
The Federal Territory Umno liaison chairman's statement today was in contrast to Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak's reprimand of such bloggers as "bangang" (stupid) during his winding up speech at the recently-concluded Umno general assembly.
Tengku Adnan, however, defended Najib's speech saying that bloggers who were sympathetic to Umno should not have attacked the party.
"Pro-Umno bloggers shouldn't talk against each other, our enemy is the other side (the opposition), not among ourselves.
"It was the right advice (but it) does not mean that we are paying them," he said.
PAS yesterday had demanded Najib to come clean on the matter and also revealed the identity of the blogger or bloggers whom he called "bangang" (stupid) during his closing speech.
Umno supreme council member and Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek was recently quoted by a news portal as saying that he was unsure if bloggers were being paid to write in support of Umno.
Like Tengku Adnan, he too defended Najib's speech, saying that it was misintepreted and explained that Najib had meant that there were bloggers who were sympathetic to both the opposition and Umno.
Prominent blogger and veteran journalist Datuk A. Kadir Jasin, in response to Najib's speech, had warned that the Umno president's remark would weaken the party's online warfare.
He noted on his blog that this was the first time an Umno leader had openly declared that the party hired bloggers to write for them.

Kadir, taking exception to the word "bangang", had said Najib's use of the word was crass, rude and did not reflect the manner and dignity of a leader.
Several pro-Umno bloggers had also defended their criticism of the party, saying that it represented the voice of the rank and file who were unhappy with the state of the party.
They said that blogs and social media were channels for Umno members to air their dissatisfaction.
