Datuk Seri G. Palanivel today announced the list of the interim central working committee (CWC) following the Home Ministry's order for the party to hold fresh elections.
He said the Registrar of Societies (RoS) had directed CWC members elected in 2009 to form an interim committee for the purpose of holding re-elections.
"Though the directive of RoS as such is not provided for in the Societies Act, 1966 or the MIC constitution, MIC will carry out fresh elections as an amicable solution to the issue," he said in a statement today.
Today, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the 68-year-old party had to hold new elections for all elected posts between April and July to avoid deregistration.
The decision was made by RoS to ensure that the dispute over the election of MIC's office-bearers could be resolved.
Palanivel said he had also nominated and appointed nine members of the CWC under Article 46.5 of the MIC constitution. They are Datuk S. Sothinathan, Datuk S. Balakrishnan, S. Sunther, Datuk V. Subramaniam, R. Vidyanathan, M. Karuppanan, Datuk M.S. Mahadevan and L. Sivasubramaniam.
"Pursuant to the sole and absolute power conferred upon me as the president under Article 49 of the MIC constitution, I appoint three persons from the interim CWC.
"Sothinathan as party secretary-general, Datuk S. Murugesan, (who was part of the 2009 CWC) as treasurer-general and Sivasubramaniam as information chief."
Palanivel said there were no Putera or Puteri wings during the elections in 2009, which were only created after amendments to the party constitution were made in September 2009.
"There will not be any representative from the two in the interim CWC," he said.
Palanivel said that under the MIC constitution, he had the power to superintend the party administration
"I will accordingly call for the meeting of the interim CWC to take all necessary steps to hold fresh elections," he said. – Bernama
