After moving to sue PAS organ Harakahdaily over a report linking his stepson to the debt-ridden 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said he would never allow anyone to misappropriate public funds in the government-owned company for personal gain.
In a post on his Facebook page, Najib said 1MDB was a strategic investment fund owned by the Malaysian government.
He said he was aware of the criticism linking him and his family to the company, with one of the latest being Harakahdaily's article which alleged that his stepson Riza Aziz had benefited from 1MDB funds for his film company.
"I wish to stress here that 1MDB is a strategic investment fund owned by the Malaysian government and I will not allow anyone to use or misappropriate public funds for personal interest or gain," Najib said on the social networking site.
The contents in the Harakahdaily article, titled "Dana 1MDB biayai syarikat filem Riza Aziz?" (1MDB funding Riza Aziz's production company?), were "mere slander by irresponsible parties and contained nothing but lies, unsupported by facts or evidence".
"As prime minister, I can accept constructive criticism.
"But when it becomes wild and baseless allegations targeting my family, then I cannot keep quiet," he said.
Najib said he had sent a letter of demand to Harakahdaily over the article to defend him and his family from slander.
