PKR to bombard IGP’s Twitter with Sirul police reports

PKR will bombard the Inspector-General of Police's Twitter account with police reports on the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder, after Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar dismissed the need to reopen the case despite Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar's recent statements to the media.

PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said party members would lodge police reports to reopen the murder case, and then upload pictures of ‎it to Twitter along with a mention of Khalid's Twitter handle @KBAB1.

"‎I's going to be fun. We are going to get everyone to lodge the same police report, we will screenshot it with the police report number and we will tweet to the IGP to see how he responds," Rafizi told a press conference at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya.

"Before this he has been very active on Twitter, ordering police action against this person and that, so let's see this time around whether‎ he will give similar instructions to investigate when he gets repeated tags on Twitter,” he said of the country’s top cop’s propensity to issue warnings to dissidents and directives to his men on Twitter.

The opposition and lawyers have been critical of Khalid’s statements, warnings and directives on Twitter but the country’s top cop hit back at his critics, reminding them that using Twitter to issue warnings to those who "affect national security and interest" was not "legally wrong".

"It is not legally wrong. However it is so, when some quarters use the platform to influence or instigate third party opinions or action that adversely affects national security and interest."

DAP had previously lodged a police report over Sirul’s recent claim that he had acted under orders when he killed Altantuya in 2006.

However, Khalid said the police report, which was based on “hearsay” and “mere allegations”, was not sufficient for the police to conduct reinvestigations.

“I was disappointed because the IGP is more eager to order the arrests and investigations into Pakatan Rakyat leaders, while the biggest crime of the decade, Altantuya’s murder, remains a mystery,” said Rafizi today.

“I believe that the people must focus on pressuring the IGP into re-investigating the case as an important witness in the case, Sirul, appears to be ready to give a new statement.”

Sirul, who is being detained in Australia, said he was under orders to kill Altantuya, and that the "real" murderers were still free.

"I was under orders. The important people with motive are still free," he was reported to have told Malaysiakini in an interview.

Sirul, 43, also said that his superior officer, then deputy superintendent Musa Safri, should have been called to give evidence in the Altantuya trial.

At the time of the murder, Musa was also the aide-de-camp of Najib, who was then the deputy prime minister.

The Court of Appeal in 2013 acquitted Sirul and Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, saying there was serious misdirection by trial judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Yasin.

The three-man appellate court said the failure to put Musa on the witness stand was important to the prosecution to unfold the narrative of its case.

On January 13, a five-man Federal Court bench led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria sentenced the men to be hanged, overturning the Court of Appeal's decision.
