PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail began her stint as opposition leader for the second time today when Parliament reconvened for its second meeting of the year.
Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia announced her appointment after administering the MPs’ oath to her and new Barisan Nasional Rompin MP Hasan Arifin.
"Dr Wan Azizah has unanimous support from the opposition to be its leader. Yang Berhormat Permatang Pauh, welcome back to Parliament and congratulations on being appointed as the opposition leader," Pandikar Amin said.
Dr Wan Azizah was previously opposition leader after the watershed 2008 March general election until August the same year, when she stepped down to make way for her husband, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who returned to politics after being jailed for sodomy in 1998.
Dr Wan Azizah won the May 7 Permatang Pauh by-election after incumbent Anwar was disqualified as MP in February this year when the Federal Court upheld a second sodomy conviction, which the
opposition said was a political conspiracy to end his career.
Anwar was MP of the constituency for four terms from 1982 to 1998 when he was jailed for corruption.
Dr Wan Azizah then held the seat for three terms until Anwar’s return to politics in August 2008. She  also led PKR during this time and remains its president.
Hasan, 62, served as Pahang’s deputy menteri besar from 1995 to 1999, and was a four-term state assemblyman in Pahang for the Tioman and Bukit Ibam state constituencies.
Dr Wan Azizah and Hasan took their oaths and were welcomed by MPs from both sides of the divide who thumped their tables in support.
"I hope both can contribute sincerely to the Dewan Rakyat and the country," said Pandikar Amin.
This is Dr Wan Azizah's fourth return to Parliament and the first for Hasan.
