PETALING JAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman has received a strong rebuke from Perak Mufti Harussani Zakaria for defending the theatrical enactment of amorous physical contact between lovers.
“Do not make light of God’s laws,” Sinar Harian quoted Harussani as saying.
According to a news report last Friday, Azalina commented that Malaysian censorship laws had stunted the creative industry. She urged the Film Censorship Board to lift its ban on scenes of physical contact between Muslim actors and actresses, saying they were only acting.
Harussani said he found it repulsive that someone who had just been appointed to a ministerial position would make ill-considered statements as if to flaunt her supposed importance.
He reminded ministers and deputy ministers that they had taken an oath in the name of God to defend the Federal Constitution.
“The Constitution states that the religion of the country is Islam,” he said. “They should not ever belittle God’s laws. If they do, they break the oath and invite God’s curse upon themselves.
“Islam is founded upon faith, and faith can be measured by the statements one makes.”
He also cautioned against an over-dependence on the rational faculty when interpreting religious laws, saying the intellect is not free from satanic influences.
“Don’t allow your concupiscent selves to rule you,” he said.
“It is incumbent upon a minister who is a Muslim to encourage good deeds and prevent evil.”
