In a bid to push for institutional reforms following the controversy over debt-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a Melbourne-based Malaysian NGO will be staging Bersih 4 in the city's central business district on August 29 to coincide with the rally planned in Kuala Lumpur.
Organiser Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia (SABM) chairperson Praveen Nagappan said there has been overwhelming response from Malaysians and even Australians who want to help out and join the rally planned at Melbourne's Federation Square.
He said this has reaffirmed the NGO's conviction that Malaysians living abroad wanted their voices heard.
"We are pleasantly surprised by the number of people reaching out to us offering to help us with organising the rally here in Melbourne, " he said in an email to The Malaysian Insider.
Nagappan said, however, that questions have been raised about the effectiveness of Bersih rallies and some have argued that similar efforts in the past have amounted to nothing.
He stressed what was most important about the rallies was what Bersih stood for.

Saying he did not agree that previous rallies were not beneficial, Nagappan pointed out that they had succeeded in emboldening more people to exercise their rights.
He also said that the effect was not limited to those who participated in the rallies alone.
"As you know, some want to participate in these rallies but are afraid of being targeted.
The effect of people gathering in the hundreds of thousands gives courage to this otherwise docile segment as well.
"For every person that takes to the street, even more people are inspired to vote, Nagappan said.
He added that while some may feel they were fighting a losing battle given the recent developments in the Malaysian political scene, the people had a moral responsibility to defend the nation.
"Truth be told, our recent experience would support this conviction.
"While this may be so, it becomes a moral responsibility of each and every one of us to speak up and fight the injustices fronting us," he added.
Nagappan said that the spirit of Bersih was not about changing or toppling the government or the prime minister, but to embolden the people to freely exercise their right to parliamentary democracy and to democratically remove anyone who stands in their way of achieving these goal.
As such, he said he would rather have the participation of 10 people who would take action rather than 1,000 participants who pass by for a photo opportunity at the rally planned in Melbourne.
Nagappan also firmly believed in the Bersih cause, saying that it was the duty of Malaysians to defend their freedom of thought, expression and association and at this time, freedom of the country's institutions.
He said that Bersih 'is a spirit' that meant different things to different people, adding that he was a product of Bersih 3.
"Before that I was between somewhat interested in these matters and blissfully unaware of the situation surrounding us because I was brought up to feel this was someone else's problem caused by someone else and that the solution lies with someone else.
"The spirit that is Bersih gave me a rude awakening that this is my problem, our problem and if we would prefer the comfort of someone else doing something about it, we ourselves are part of the problem.
"Now ask yourself what the spirit of Bersih means to you," he said.
Back home, plans are underway for a 34-hour overnight rally at Dataran Merdeka organised by electoral reform watchdog Bersih 2.
Chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has met with the police to request the authorities to facilitate the safety and security of participants.
Maria told The Malaysian Insider that Bersih 4 is being planned by other groups in over 30 cities worldwide.
