NAJIB SHOULD WORRY: Did Johor Sultan broker an alliance between Zahid & Muhyiddin
Although Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has succeeded Muhyiddin Yassin as deputy prime minister after the latter was unceremoniously removed from the cabinet, there appears to be no animosity between the two.
The duo were reportedly in a jovial mood as they spoke to each other in Johor today, during a function hosted by the state’s sultan.
“At the function this afternoon, Muhyiddin and Zahid sat to his majesty’s (Sultan Ibrahim Ismail) left. As they ate, the duo kept leaning in to whisper at each other, and Muhyiddin even passed food from his own plate to Zahid. Their interaction was very positive.
“After his majesty has finished his meal, he took the menteri besar (Khaled Nordin) and the duo aside for a chat. At high points of the talk, Zahid was seen wrapping his arms over Muhyiddin’s shoulder, drawing attention from the crowd,” according to the report by Oriental Daily today.
Muhyiddin was dropped from the cabinet as deputy prime minister and education minister during the July 28 cabinet reshuffle, following a fall out with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over the 1MDB issue.
Zahid had replaced Muhyiddin for the deputy prime minister post, and according to Oriental Daily, today is the first time the two had met since the cabinet reshuffle.
Shortly after, it was speculated that Muhyiddin would be arrested when a video where he recounted his confrontation with Najib about the RM2.6 billion funds in the latter’s personal account was leaked.
However, Zahid had denied this in his capacity as home minister.
Zahid a personal friend of sultan
Oriental Daily said the meeting today took place on the second day of the Johor royalty’s meet-the-people tour, which includes a stop at Muhyiddin’s constituency of Pagoh.
According to the report, Zahid is a personal friend of the sultan, and the former had accompanied the sultan to ride high-powered motorcycles during such tours on several occasions.
It said Muhyiddin, Khaled and other dignitaries had arrived at the field where the function was held first, at about 11am. Zahid arrived at 11.30am, followed closely by the sultan.
At the function, Zahid had also reportedly brought ‘gifts’ worth RM1 million each.
One was an allocation from the Prime Minister’s Department for Johor Prince Tunku Abdul Jalil’s cancer foundation, and the other were funds to help cover the cost of the Johor royalty’s meet-the-people tour. - M'kini
