Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar today said the transfer of the Special Branch deputy chief, Datuk Abdul Hamid Bador, to the Prime Minister’s Department was not something out of the ordinary, adding that before this, many senior officers, including himself, were transferred to other government agencies.
The inspector-general of police said allegations that the Special Branch was being “cleaned up” with the removal of its top officials were slanderous.
“I advise the media to be more careful in their reports as inaccurate reports will lead to all sorts of implications which can disrupt public order.
Khalid said the writer might have twisted the facts just to make the article more readable.
He said Hamid had applied to go on leave and had not been ordered to do so, contrary to media reports.
Khalid said Hamid was told that he would be transferred out of Special Branch, after the latter changed his mind and decided not to retire early.
He added that Hamid's new position, which would see him heading a security division in the Prime Minister's Department, was in recognition of his abilities and experience in tackling such issues.
Khalid said there was also nothing unusual in the closed-door ceremony for Hamid to hand over his duties to his successor, Datuk Mohd Haniff Hanudin.
"Ceremonies like these are not out of the norm among the police, especially for the Special Branch, which does not seek publicity."
Hamid is expected to report for duty at the Prime Minister's Department after his leave ends on August 28.
He told the Malaysiakini news portal yesterday that he did not know the reasons for his abrupt transfer.
Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said Hamid's transfer was an administrative matter.
He said the reason for transferring civil servants was normally due to the services of the affected officers, not for any political reason.
"Transfers are generally for service purposes (urusan perkhidmatan). Recently, we had that incident with the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) officers. It was due to their service. When the transfer order was cancelled, it was also over the same reason.
"We just want officers to understand that whenever something happens, do not talk in your personal capacity.
"Your statements must be on the behalf of your department, but even then, not everybody can simply issue statements," he told reporters in Penang today after a Civil Defence Department event at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
