Umno and Muslim groups sparked racial and religious tension in their attempt to destabilise the Selangor government last year, Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli told the Sessions Court today.
They created a climate of fear due to the multiracial composition in the state, he said in his defence on a charge of insulting with intent to provoke Umno members.
Rafizi, who was the then PKR strategic director, said Christians were barred from using the word Allah in their religious practices.
Rafizi said Umno also planned a riot to be held in front of a church in Klang, and there were reports of petrol bombs (Molotov cocktails) being thrown at a church and a provocative banner was found in a church in Penang that had an effect on Selangor and the population.
"This was followed by inflammable statements by Umno, Jati, Perkasa and Isma leaders," Rafizi said, adding that the public came to see Pakatan Rakyat leaders to express their concern.
He said even Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin gave a silent nod to his party members to demonstrate in front of the church on a Sunday.
Rafizi said all these occurred in the space of one month early last year.
He said that it was under these circumstances that PKR had roped in its de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be active in Selangor politics.
"This is how the 'Kajang move' came about as we wanted Anwar to contest the Kajang seat to be a member of the legislative assembly.
"I had to give numerous press interviews to explain in detail the Kajang move," he said when examined by lawyer Eric Paulsen.
One the journalists who interviewed Rafizi was fz.com  reporter Mohd Azril Annuar who had spoken to Rafizi by telephone.
Rafizi, 38, is accused of intentionally insulting Umno members with the knowledge that it could disturb public peace through a statement in an article entitled “Will Rafizi quit if Selangor is not toppled?”.
The offence was allegedly committed at the office of The Edge Malaysia Communication Sdn Bhd, Menara KLK, Jalan PJU 7/6, Mutiara Damansara, at 11.40am on February 4, 2014.
The charge, under Section 504 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum imprisonment of two years or fine, or both upon conviction.
Cross-examined by deputy public prosecutor Azahari Harun, Rafizi said he had no intention to provoke or insult Umno members.
Sessions judge Azwarnida Affandi fixed September 21 to hear submissions.
