While the Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu rally gathered momentum today, a small group of people decided to have a simple birthday picnic to celebrate Malaysia Day, hosted by Malaysians for Malaysia.
Social activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir was among the 15 or so people who broke bread with each other at the Happy Birthday Picnic for Malaysia, at KLCC Park, reported The Star Online.
“Shouting racial slurs and touting one race as better than another is not our way,” said group representative Azrul Mohd Khalib.
“We respect the rights of those who went for the red shirt rally today, but we have a right to celebrate Malaysia and Malaysians too,” he added.
Marina said the event highlighted the positive side of Malaysians.
“Malaysia is home to all of us, regardless of race or religion. At this event, we are just relaxing and getting to know other Malaysians different from us, and yet the same.
“I am appreciative of anyone organising positive events today, in a positive manner,” she said.
