Adenan: Five years more, then I’ll retire

Sarawak chief minister asks voters to give him a full term to carry out his plans for the state.
adenanKUCHING: Sarawak chief minister, Adenan Satem, hinting of elections early next year, hopes Sarawakians will give him a mandate to continue for a full five-year term of his own, after which he will retire.
Adenan took office in March last year when Taib Mahmud stepped down and became the new Governor.
He said in a speech on Friday night that he needed five more years to carry out his plans for the state.
Looking ahead to the next state elections, which must be held by August next year, he said he had made about 43 decisions including reducing electricity tariffs and abolishing tolls.
“But I don’t have enough time to do more if I’m given just two years. So give me some more time so that I can complete what we set out to do for Sarawak. That is my only request. After five years I will retire. I’ll be 76 by that time,” he said, according to Star Online.
He said in jest that he had no wish to be chief minister for 33 years (the length of time his predecessor, Taib, served in office).
Adenan also pledged to ensure political stability for Sarawak if he received a strong mandate in the coming state election.
He said he would seek state assembly approval of an allocation of RM500 million next month to increase opportunities in the business sector, especially for bumiputeras.
“This is what I can do for you. What are you going to do for me? Because some time early next year, we’re going to face an election,” he said, according to the report.
