Nazri puzzled by HRW’s ‘police state’ allegation

He says the press wouldn't be free to ask him questions if the HRW report was correct.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz today expressed puzzlement over a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report alleging that Malaysia was slowly becoming a police state.
Speaking to reporters outside the Dewan Rakyat, he pointed to the freedom of journalists to interview him as proof that Malaysians enjoyed their human rights.
“You are so free here you can ask me a lot of questions,” he said. “Do you feel like you’re in Zimbabwe or Libya?”
He added that he was tolerant of HRW’s right to express its opinion.
In its report yesterday, HRW criticised the Malaysian government for using what it said were “repressive laws” to silence critics, including those demanding that Prime Minister Najib Razak answer corruption allegations.
The US-based group said that Najib, despite his promises to end repression, was accelerating a crackdown that began after a poor showing in the 13th general election.
