Electoral reform group Bersih 2.0 hopes to meet Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia to persuade him to allow debate and voting on the motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Opposition pact Pakatan Harapan submitted the motion early last month but Pandikar said days later that the motion would only appear in the Order Papers at the next parliamentary sitting which will only take place in the first quarter of next year.
This was in accordance with the Standing Orders, he said.
Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah said the group had come to Parliament today to hand Pandikar a letter requesting an audience.
"We want to persuade him to hear this vote of no-confidence out, and for the MPs to vote on it," Maria said after presenting postcards and online letters from Malaysians to opposition federal lawmakers as part of its campaign outside the Parliament lobby today.
Bersih 2.0 last month launched a campaign for a vote of no-confidence against the prime minister, urging the public to participate and convey a strong message that they had lost confidence in his leadership.
To date, some 31,000 postcards and online letters have been collected from 211 constituencies, some of which were given to the MPs today.
Quite a "substantial" amount were from Najib's Pekan federal seat, Maria said, although she did not know the exact number.
She said the campaign would continue until a no-confidence vote was taken.
"We are asking MPs to vote on the no-confidence motion because we want answers on 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion in the prime minister's accounts," she said.
Najib is under fire over the scandal surrounding his brainchild, state investment vehicle 1Malaysia Development Berhad as well as the RM2.6 billion "donation" from an unknown Middle Eastern donor into his personal accounts.
He has denied taking money from 1MDB but has otherwise has not accounted for the funds.
