Call to join 1MDB fight gets lukewarm response from ex-top civil servants

Amanah's call to the retired top civil servants and officials to join politicians to speak out on 1MDB issues has been met with lukewarm reception.
Several former top officials declined to comment, while pro-reform group G25 said it is an apolitical group when asked if it would heed the opposition's call.
"Our group will remain apolitical but will continue to campaign for reforms in the governance system to ensure that those in power are made accountable for their actions and personal behaviour," G25 replied in a text message.
In making the call, Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said these former officials have much influence on society as scholars, artistes, academicians and religious leaders, and must use this to help resolve "the largest corruption issue since Merdeka".
This includes former army generals, former inspectors-general of police, former attorneys-general, former judges, former chief secretaries and other top civil servants who have served with integrity, Salahuddin (photo) said.
Former attorney-general Abu Talib Othman, who helmed the Attorney-General's Chambers from 1980 to 1993, said this was merely Salahuddin's opinion.
"These are all allegations, without proof yet. So, what does he want us to do? To speak out? To speak out on what?"
"Anyway, I don't want to comment. This is his opinion. We may or we may not agree with him," Abu Talib told Malaysiakini.

"Many have spoken; let the authorities take note of the concerns of Malaysians. This is all I have to say," he said.
Meanwhile, former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed declined to comment, claiming that he has yet to read the article.
"Let me read the article first, I have no comment," Abu Kassim said.
Retired Federal Court judge Gopal Sri Ram also declined to comment when contacted. - Mkini
