Rosli Dahlan: Charge Langkawi MP for Lese Majeste

Lawyer calls for arrest of Umno's Nawawi Ahmad, and criminal proceedings to be instituted by Attorney-General for distorting facts, maligning royal institution.

PETALING JAYA: Prominent lawyer Rosli Dahlan has added his voice to the criticism against Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad over a Facebook posting alleging that the Yang diPertuan Agong (YDPA) is the Malaysian Official 1 (MO1) named in civil suits by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) last month.
“I am appalled and outraged by his FB posting. The suggestion by Nawawi that our beloved YDPA, our king and sovereign, is MO1 is perverse and treasonous.
“It is ‘Lese Mejeste’ against our beloved king, and is just to divert attention from the scandal involving Umno’s President who has brought much disgrace to the people of this country,” Rosli said in a statement.
Rosli, who is currently overseas, was responding to the FMT report on criticisms by Facebook users, and also former Langkawi Umno women’s wing member Anina Saadudin, over the FB posting by Nawawi.
The Langkawi MP, in a Facebook comment yesterday, had provided his own method of determining the identity of MO1.
“According to the Federal Constitution, the country’s government was formed with three separate and independent entities – the judiciary headed by the chief justice, the parliamentary body led by the Speaker, and the executive directed by the prime minister.
“Hence, in accordance with the Constitution, the Agong is the MO1.”
The last line has since been removed from the original Facebook posting, but it was still viewable as of this morning by clicking on the post’s “Edited” button.
A new line is currently displayed as follows: “All three entities are responsible to the Agong. Hence, Najib is not the MO1, as he is either MO2, MO3, or MO4.”
Rosli also called for the new party formed by former Umno leaders, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir, to protect the dignity of the royal institution.
“All right thinking Malaysians must rise and defend the dignity of our sovereign. The new party, Bersatu, and its leaders must also rise, speak out and protect the Royal Institution from further abuses by such Umno members.
“This is a rude and treasonous statement that cannot be forgiven, more so as it was made by a Member of Parliament,” Rosli said, adding that the Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar must arrest Nawawi over the matter.
Rosli believes such distortion of facts related to the civil suits by the US DoJ also demands that the Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali institute criminal proceedings against the Langkawi MP.
“It is abhorrent and despicable that in trying to defend the indefensible, this man has seen it fit to malign our sovereign in such a manner.
“This is what happens when cash is king, justice is traversed and the rule of law is trampled,” Rosli said.
