Snatch case spirals into fake 'baby selling' story on FB

A snatch theft incident has been exagerated and turned into a hoax about baby snatching and selling in Sarawak, Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Dev Kumar said.
He said a woman, 59, had her necklace snatched by two suspects on a motorcycle near Ramin Garden, Arang Road on Jan 21 and lodged a report at the Kota Sentosa police station that day.
The report did not contain any information regarding a child being snatched by the assailants.
However, on Jan 23, a purported eye-witness posted on Facebook that he saw an attempted baby snatching incident and advised parents to bring bodyguards when going outdoors with their children.

The Facebook user also claimed that victim was his neighbour and who was out with her grandchild.
The Facebook user said his brother managed to "land a smack on the rear" of the pillion rider.
"I ain't kidding. Story is real," he wrote.
Dev said the Facebook user was called in by police and let off with a warning.
"I have been informed that he has taken down the post," he said.
"The posting had caused unnecessary fear and nervousness among parents resulting in the police having to work on damage control."- Mkini
