PETALING JAYA: Goh Siu Lin created history when she was elected the first woman lawyer to head the 25-year-old Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee.
Goh, who is also the Association of Malaysian Women Lawyers president, beat Alex Anton Netto and Mohd Amir Sharil Bahari, better known as Amir Bahari.
Goh polled 663 votes, Anton 240 and Amir 31.
Some 1,071 members, the biggest turnout in recent years, were present at the annual general meeting of the biggest Bar in the country.
The Malaysian Bar website revealed the KL Bar has 7,504 members.
An elated Goh, who has been in practice for about 20 years, said she would strive to deliver her campaign promises to members.
“I and my committee will offer a different kind of leadership,” she told FMT.
Goh said she would place emphasis on feminism and fight for equality in the legal fraternity.
“I will also work towards equipping members with professional knowledge in carrying out their tasks,” said Goh, who is the out-going secretary.
Goh also thanked members, especially the senior lawyers, for sending a strong message that race and religion had no place in the professional body.
Amir Bahari had created a stir when he campaigned to Islamise the KL Bar by discontinuing the serving of alcohol at its events.
He was also for legal amendments for harsher shariah punishments and also pledged to organise open house events for all major religious festivals and to facilitate members with networking opportunities. -FMT
