PETALING JAYA: The involvement of mainland China businesses and industry in Malaysia is expected to grow with Proton being linked to a mainland China auto manufacturer.
In the wake of a reshuffling of top management at Proton Holdings Bhd, a New Straits Times (NST) report yesterday speculated it to be an indication of a Chinese carmaker edging closer towards becoming its foreign partner.
Recent reports have suggested that China’s Geely Automobile Ltd was leading French carmaker Groupe PSA in the race to be Proton’s new strategic partner, with both carmakers actively undertaking due diligence work at Proton’s headquarters currently.
According to NST, Proton is aiming to announce its strategic partner in April.
Meanwhile, in a statement released yesterday, Proton said its chief technical officer Abdul Rashid Musa is now the chief executive officer of Proton Edar Sdn Bhd, the distribution arm for Proton cars.
He takes over from Rohime Shafie, who is to be the new head of automotive operations at DRB-HICOM Bhd, Proton’s parent company. Rohime was previously Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd president.
Rohime had been assigned to the group’s automotive distribution and manufacturing and engineering division, NST reported, quoting the Proton statement.
“Rashid has over 27 years experience in the automotive field, with involvement in various automotive projects and organisations,” Proton said.
Proton chief executive officer Ahmad Fuaad Kenali is confident that Rashid would be able to lead Proton Edar on its growth trajectory to further improve its market share.
Fuaad also paid tribute to Rohime for serving Proton since his secondment to the company on Aug 20, 2014. -FMT
