20 reports filed over cartoon, IGP tells media to be sensitive

The police have received 20 reports on a controversial newspaper cartoon, prompting inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar to remind the media to be more sensitive.
The reports were on the cartoon in Nanyang Siang Pau that depicted PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia as monkeys.
"I advise all, including the press, that we have to be sensitive, our country is a multiracial one.
"Don't write or draw something that can create unease among our society," Khalid told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
However, he declined to draw parallels with the Charlie Hebdo attack in France when asked about it.
In 2015, 12 people working for Charlie Hebdo, a satirical French newspaper, were killed in an attack sparked by outrage over caricatures lampooning Prophet Muhammad.
The Nanyang cartoon, published last Saturday, came two days after Hadi read out a motion in Parliament, proposing to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355).
Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia then deferred the debate on the motion to the next sitting of the House in July, causing an uproar among Pakatan Harapan lawmakers.

The cartoon sparked protests yesterday, with one PAS Youth leader calling for the Chinese daily to be shut down.
Nanyang has apologised over the cartoon.
The Home Ministry, which controls printing licences for newspapers, has sent Nanyang a show-cause letter.
Khalid said police would also be investigating the reports lodged against the newspaper.- Mkini
