Umno is not behind the postponement of a parliamentary debate and voting process on the amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or Act 355, said party secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor today.
Tengku Adnan, who is better known as Ku Nan, said the decision to postpone the motion bought by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to the next Dewan Rakyat sitting was made by Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia himself.
"This is the duty of the speaker, it has nothing to do with us (BN lawmakers). The speaker made a decision and we have to agree.
"(The postponement) is not under the power of Datuk Seri Najib (Abdul Razak), nor Tengku Adnan and Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid (Hamidi'), we have no powers," he said after attending an affordable housing projects in Putrajaya.
Tengku Adnan's denial comes following criticisms leveled by opposition lawmakers that the tabling of Hadi's motion without an ensuing debate and voting process, was a political gimmick.
In dousing such notions, Tengku Adnan said the decision made by Pandikar was not wrong according to the Parliamentary Standing Orders.
He urged the opposition to not spin the matter to confuse the rakyat.
"Don't spin it. I urge the opposition, particularly those without brains, to please not spin the issue and create chaos."- Mkini
