Low cost of living? But rakyat continue to suffer, PKR info chief tells PM Najib

PKR information chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh finds no meaning in the finding of a survey cited by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak that the cost of living in Malaysia is the lowest among Asean member countries.
This, argued Syed Ibrahim, is because the rakyat continue to be burdened with sharp increases in prices of goods and services, as well as the removal of various subsidies.
"Despite internationally-accredited surveys, the rakyat can differentiate between the hardship of facing today's cost of living with the times before this.
"The survey, which compared the prices of goods and services in 133 cities around the world, did nothing to showcase the reality of life and the suffering of low-income earners," Syed Ibrahim said in a statement today.
As for Najib, who said that the government had always been trying to improve people's income through various programmes, Syed Ibrahim said this was nothing but oft-repeated rhetorics.
"What has Umno/Barisan Nasional led by Najib done? Income is not increasing and what about efforts by Najib's government to reduce the prices of goods?"
The 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M), he pointed out, continues to fail in solving the rakyat's cost of living woes.
Survey contradicts April 19 findings
Commenting further on the survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit that Najib quoted, Syed Ibrahim said the survey contradicted the April 19 findings of the Department of Statistics.
According to the department's findings, the consumer price index (CPI), the country's inflation rose by 5.1 percent in March from a year earlier.
Among the major groups that recorded price increases were transport (23 percent), food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.1 percent) as well as housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels at 2.1 percent.
"This shows that the survey cited by Najib does not give the true picture in relation to the current economic scenario and the burdens faced by the rakyat, especially for low-income households."
Najib, in his blog post on Friday, said the low cost of living in Malaysia among Asean member countries was the result of various efforts undertaken by the government in reducing the burden of the cost of living in the country.

The prime minister said the issue of the rising cost of living was the government's priority in a bid to transform Malaysia as a fully developed high-income nation.
The National Entrepreneur Group Economic Fund (Tekun Nasional ); Retail Shop Transformation Programme (Tukar); Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (Teraju); Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Startup Scheme (Superb); Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara); Young Entrepreneurs Fund; and e-Rezeki and Facilitation Fund were among programmes the government had introduced to improve the people's income.
In terms of cost control, Najib added, the government would continue implementing programmes such as the 1Malaysia People's Shop (KR1M); 1Malaysia Housing Programme (PR1MA); 1Malaysia Clinics and 1Malaysia Book Voucher.- Mkini
