PAUL LOW – A ‘DISTANT RELATIVE’ OF JHO LOW? WHY THE ‘MINIMUM’ REPLIES ON SRC PROBE, WHO ARE YOU PROTECTING – MINISTER GRILLED

An opposition MP has slammed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Paul Low for the latter’s one-paragraph reply to a parliamentary question on the SRC International Sdn Bhd investigations.
This, said Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, is particularly since cases linked to SRC’s former parent 1MDB are being conducted worldwide.
“There are several countries that are monitoring and have taken steps to charge those involved in the 1MDB scandal.
“SRC International is a former subsidiary of 1MDB, which is alleged to have transferred RM42 million into Prime Minister Najib Razak’s account.
“And yet, Paul Low can only give a single paragraph answer about the company in Parliament.
“What is Low’s true function and job in the cabinet, apart from giving one-paragraph answers about his ‘distant relative’ Jho Low and his boss, Naijb?” asked Lim in a statement today.
Last week, Low in a written reply to Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Gelang Patah) said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has completed its investigations into SRC, without any elaboration or details about the outcome.
Lim had asked whether MACC was still trying to track down the three individuals – SRC managing director Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, director Suboh Md Yassin and businessman Jho Low – linked to the SRC investigations since August 2015.
“Could Paul Low give some clarification to the people – who pay him a five-figure salary every month and provide him a driver – what success orprestige he has achieved for the country since he was appointed into Najib’s caibnet in 2013 and tasked with matters of administration and integrity?
“If he cannot or is reluctant to do so, what integrity does the ‘minister of integrity’ have?” asked Lim.
‘What of wealthy BN leaders?’
The DAP MP also asked Low what the MACC was doing about BN politicians who had considerable wealth, in view of the five-day detention a PKR Youth leader Adam Rosly, who is being investigated for the source of the latter’s wealth.
“What is Paul Low’s opinion on the wealth of some of the cabinet ministers and BN backbenchers? Has MACC ever apprehended them to probe their wealth?” he asked.
Lim said the minister, who was former Transparency International Malaysia president, should step down as senator should he be trying to “cover up” the 1MDB and SRC scandals, or should he come to announce Najib and Low have no involvement in the 1MDB scandal.

In January, then Bar president Steven Thiru noted “at least eleven countries – Australia, British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Singapore, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, and Venezuela – where there have been investigations, measures imposed on financial institutions, criminal prosecutions and convictions, and proceedings for forfeiture of assets”.
Most significantly, last July the US Department of Justice (DOJ) launched what it touts to be its largest action ever brought under its Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative (Kari).
Through a series of civil forfeiture suits, it seeks to seize over US$1 billion worth of assets that were supposedly the result of criminal proceeds from the embezzlement of over US$3.5 billion from 1MDB.
Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali however had cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in the RM42 million transfer, as well as in the RM2.6 billion donation scandal.
