An aide to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said has filed a police report on an offensive and crude Facebook posting that targeted Azalina.
The minister's senior private secretary Chyairreil Annwar Akmal lodged the report with the Dang Wangi district police station yesterday.
The posting was uploaded on a Facebook page belonging to a group calling itself “Otai Bersih”. The term “Otai” is used to describe “old timers” or veterans.
In a statement posted on Azalina's Facebook, her aide said the police report was filed in order to ensure her safety, and to deny the posting that is false and offensive.
“A similar complaint was also made with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) this morning.
“This is to ensure that the authorities investigate and take stern action against the individuals or those who are responsible of abusing social media,” Chyairreil Annwar added.
Meanwhile, Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah denied that the “Otai Bersih” Facebook page is related to the electoral watchdog.
“There are so many fake FB pages and accounts that use Bersih's name. We cannot be held accountable or responsible for what they say or post,” Maria told Malaysiakini.
Maria said Bersih would also report the page to Facebook's administrators.
"This is spreading of false news and this is not what freedom of expression means. Implicit in the freedom of expression, there is a duty and responsibility of the person or persons to post information or data that speaks truth," she added.
In a Twitter post, Selangor state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh also criticised the attack on Azalina, and expressed solidarity with the minister.
"This is horrible. I condemn such actions which disrespect women. Personal attacks like this can never be justified," said the DAP state assemblyperson.- Mkini
