JOHOR BAHRU: The management of a private Quran recitation (tahfiz) school in Kota Tinggi, Johor, where one of its students had both his legs amputated after allegedly being beaten up, has refused comment.
Its principal, Mohammad Afdhaluddin Ismail, declined to say anything about the incident when FMT approached him at Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI) today.
“I have no comment to make. Just wait, we will call a media conference soon,” he said.
The student, Mohamad Thaqif Amin, 11, was admitted to Hospital Sultan Ismail here last week. His legs were amputated subsequently after doctors discovered they had been infected.
An assistant warden of the school was arrested and remanded for four days until Wednesday this week to help in the investigation.
The condition of Thaqif reportedly worsened yesterday with blood clots in his left shoulder. However, an operation was carried out to remove the clots and the outcome was positive, said his aunt, Nurul Nabila Ahmad, 30.
She said Thaqif was still in critical condition although the swelling in his face had subsided after dialysis treatment for his failing kidneys.
Afdhaluddin was at the HSI leading 10 students from the school to visit Thaqif.
They spent about 40 minutes there. The visit was the second made by the principal since Thaqif was warded.
The tahfiz school has been operating for seven years and has 110 students, aged from 11 to 17. It has a staff of 15, including six teachers. Thaqif was enrolled there last Jan 27. -FMT
