DAP's Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua has been criticised by Umno supreme council member Irmohizam Ibrahim, for claiming that a private member's bill from the opposition has never been given a chance in parliament.
"This is an obvious falsehood which they try to peddle so that the rakyat will believe their every lie.
"This is because private members' bills from the opposition have been tabled in parliament before, and it is very strange if they deny this themselves," Irmohizam said, as reported by Umno Online today.
In 1977, three opposition private members' bills were put forth by DAP's Kinta MP Ngan Siong Hing and then Kota Melaka MP Lim Kit Siang, Irmohizam, who is the Kuala Selangor MP, said.
At that time, Lim had tabled a private private bill to enact the Workers Protection and Minimum Wage Act 1977.
"What is sad is that the opposition leader and Lim himself did not correct Tony Pua's statement.
"This is because every lie said by Pua was uttered to secure the opposition's position," Irmohizam said.
'Don't spread lies'
Irmohizam then claimed that the opposition's goal is to "trap and deceive" the rakyat.
"Is DAP brave enough to fire the PAS exco in Selangor if they truly do not agree with the private member's bill brought by Marang MP?
"Hopefully, Pua can explain without getting emotional on social media," he said.
As a parliamentarian, he said Pua should be careful when issuing statements.
It is true that the job of the opposition is to oppose the government, he said, but not to the point of lying to the rakyat.
"I also hope the rakyat, especially those who are Muslim, can rise up to criticise Pua's statement, which is seen as interfering in the business of an act that is related to Islam as the constitutional religion of the country," he said.
Pua had previously criticised the tabling of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355).
In a Facebook post on April 6, he had said that opposition motions and bills have never made it to the Dewan Rakyat floor for debate in the history of the Malaysian parliament.- Mkini
