Is Umno ignorant of wasatiyyah principles, Kit Siang asks Najib

DAP supremo recounts how Ramadan began with intolerance, distrust and even hate by some in Penang, demanding non-Muslims be excluded from all buka puasa events.
limkitsiang-najibPETALING JAYA: Lim Kit Siang says the lies, intolerance and support for extremist behaviour as demonstrated by some Umno leaders during the holy month of Ramadan is in defiance of the wasatiyyah principles of moderation, justice, balance and excellence.
Calling out Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Razali Ibrahim and Penang Umno chief Zainal Abidin Osman, Lim said their actions show they are going against their own party president and Prime Minister Najib Razak who likes to promote his wasatiyyah principles of moderation around the world.
“Razali had supported the thuggish roughing up of DAP MP for Kluang Liew Chin Tong at the Bazaar Ramadan last Saturday, based on a lie that the Kluang DAP had requested a relocation of the bazaar 10 years ago, when it was in fact the Kluang MCA which had wanted the bazaar relocated,” Lim said in a statement today.
“Then yesterday, Zainal accuses Penang DAP of hosting numerous dinners for the past 10 years in the state, saying ‘it happens almost every night in Penang’.”
Calling Zainal a bad and lousy liar, the Gelang Patah MP said it would be impossible for anyone to believe that Penang DAP had been holding fund-raising dinners “almost every night” in the past 10 years.
“As far as I know, there has been not more than half a dozen Penang DAP dinners in the two years of 2016 and 2017.
“But more serious than the Penang Umno chief’s attempt to be a bad and lousy liar in the month of Ramadan is why he ignored the Umno president and prime minister’s wasatiyyah principles of moderation, justice, balance and excellence?” Lim asked.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini had reported Zainal demanding that DAP come clean on how their dinner events are funded.
“DAP has been in power for nearly 10 years and during this period, it was very festive politically with multiple dinners, which pretty much happens almost every night in Penang.
“These functions cost money and the public wants to know the source of the money. Penang Umno hopes that dirty money is not involved,” Zainal was quoted as saying by the news portal.
Lim then recounted how Ramadan had begun with the intolerance, distrust and even hate showed by some quarters in Penang, demanding that non-Muslims should be excluded from all buka puasa events.
He said similar incidents then affected DAP leaders in other states too.
“In the holy month of Ramadan, gutter politics and the politics of lies, falsehood and incitement of hatred reached new depths when Selangor DAP leader and municipal councillor Young Syefura Othman, or better known as Rara, was demonised on social media for her visits to a Ramadan bazaar in Cheras.
“Then DAP national vice-chairman and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok had to lodge a police report over a false press statement released under her name in connection with a ‘Jerusalem’s Jubilee’ event in Melaka, which she had no clue was even taking place,” Lim said.
He called for the prime minister to declare if the wasatiyyah principles in Islam were only meant for the international arena, but did not need to be applied in Malaysia.
“What is the use of Najib preaching the wasatiyyah principles through his Global Movement of Moderates (GMM) to the world when Umno leaders treat such wasatiyyah principles with contempt even in the holy month of Ramadan?” -FMT
