Onus on Najib to respond to RM9.5m allegation, says opposition MP

The onus is on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to respond to the allegations that he had purportedly transferred RM9.5 million to prominent lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said an opposition MP.
DAP's Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo said while it is up to Shafee to respond to the allegations, Najib is a public figure who should provide the rakyat a clear explanation.
"It is entirely up to Shafee if he wants to respond or not. He should know what best to do in the circumstances.
"I am more inclined to press the prime minister for an answer. He is a public figure and it is best that he makes a clear statement soon," Gobind said when contacted by Malaysiakini yesterday.
Whistleblower site Sarawak Report had earlier alleged that Najib paid Shafee a fee of RM9.5 million for handling former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's case.
Malaysiakini cannot independently verify Sarawak Report's claim. However, repeated attempts to solicit comments from the Prime Minister's Office and from Muhammad Shafee has been unsuccessful.

Muhammad Shafee said last week that he would issue a media statement on the matter. So far no statement has been forthcoming from him.
Following this revelation, Anwar filed an originating summons to set aside his conviction and sentence, as well as a discovery order against Najib and Shafee.
Najib has declined to comment on the legal action filed by Anwar, saying he does not want " to comment anything about a legal case".- Mkini
