GEORGE TOWN: A signature campaign calling for swift justice for T Nhaveen, who died after a horrific assault at the hands of five teenagers, has garnered over 26,000 supporters since it was started on Wednesday.
Titled “Justice for T Nhaveen and for All Bullied Victims”, the petition is addressed to the United Nations, the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Human Rights Campaign, the Penang chief minister and the prime minister.
The petition was initiated by Mukhesh Ravi, a computer engineering student from Ipoh on Wednesday.
Mukhesh, who also runs a video blog on YouTube called I.Am.Cash, said he was driven to start the campaign after the incident in which 18-year-old Nhaveen was repeatedly assaulted with helmets, tortured and sodomised on June 9, leaving him brain-dead before he passed away Thursday evening.
“It actually kind of hit me. How can bullies just walk away? This is not only for Nhaveen but for the thousands out there who are getting bullied.
“This is for them, so that they can be brave to voice out. I do not mind being that voice,” he told FMT.
Mukhesh said the target of 25,000 was set by the website Change.org, which acts as a platform for online petitions.
“So my goal is to let it be, the numbers don’t matter. Justice must be served,” he said.
“But I am proud to see so many good people supporting my petition. I am glad.
“I know that there is still good in this world amid all the chaos that has been going on recently.”
Nhaveen and his friend T Previin, 19, were attacked by five teenagers, whom they recognised as friends and former schoolmates.
One of them allegedly abducted Nhaveen, dragging him to a nearby field, where he was later found unconscious with wounds to his head, hip, private parts and anus.
He was later rushed to the Penang Hospital but died yesterday after his heart rate dropped.
Previin meanwhile underwent surgery to reconstruct his cheekbone after it was crushed due to the beating he received by the five teenagers. He is recovering at the same hospital Nhaveen was admitted to.
Police have reclassified Nhaveen’s death as murder, after initially investigating it as a rioting case under the Penal Code.
The five have been remanded to help in investigations.
