PKR MP claims Budget consultation sessions a sham

A PKR lawmaker has raised concerns that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's annual budget consultation session with stakeholders may be nothing more than a sham.
Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul claimed that despite Najib's promise of taking into account the public's input in drafting the federal budget, the same problems remains unresolved while new problems will emerge every year.
Among others, Johari in a statement cited increasing development allocations for mega projects, while cuts continue to be made on the budget for sectors including education.
Referring to this year's consultation session which was held on June 15, Johari said Najib had described it as an important platform for the public and private sector, as well as civil society groups, to share their views on current challenges faced by the country.
"Despite having received various proposals and complaints, the budget for education continues to be slashed every year.

"Where is the importance of education?" he asked.
He further claimed that the government has consistently failed to address issues of rising costs of living that continues to burden the people.
"Promises made by the government are only for the general elections and will be forgotten once they attain victory," he said in cautioning the people to not fall for such empty promises.
Najib had during his opening speech at the Budget 2018 consultation session reportedly pledged to ensure that the government would be able to meet the need of each segment of the population.
Budget 2018 will be tabled at the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 27.- Mkini
