Raus sworn in as Chief Justice

Chief Justice Raus Sharif retired Thursday and his service has now been extended for another three years.
Md-Raus-Sharif_hakim_law_600PETALING JAYA: Raus Sharif was sworn in again as Chief Justice before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara on Friday night.
Raus replaces Tun Arifin Zakaria, who retired after reaching the age of 66 years and six months on March 31, reported The Star.
Raus was appointed to his current position on April 1. Raus retired Thursday and his service has now been extended for three years.
The appointment of Raus has been mired in controversy following protests from the legal fraternity, who said no Federal Court judge can remain in his administrative post after reaching 66 years and six months of age.
The swearing-in comes a day after the Malaysian Bar announced it would challenge the decision to extend his tenure as an additional judge of the Federal Court.
Former chief justice Arifin Zakaria said he had proposed Raus’ name to the King on March 30, the day of his retirement.
Meanwhile Court of Appeal president Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin will remain in his current administrative post for two years from Sept 28. Zulkefli will retire on Sept 27 after reaching the mandatory retirement age. - FMT
