Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos was arrested last night, likely in connection with his beer bottle-smashing stunt outside the Selangor state secretariat office yesterday morning.
“I was surrounded and arrested by the police at Sekinchan after finishing an Umno division meeting.
“I think this is going too far. I am now on the way to Shah Alam police district headquarters,” he said in a text message last night.
Malaysiakini is attempting to contact the Shah Alam police to confirm Jamal’s arrest.
Yesterday morning, Jamal had brought crates of beer to the Selangor state secretariat office and smashed them with a sledgehammer outside the building, in protest against beer festivals in Selangor.
Police confirmed later in the day that a police report on the incident had been lodged and they are investigating Jamal under Section 143 of the Penal Code for unlawful assembly.
If found guilty, Jamal could face up to six months’ jail, or a fine, or both.
He was also under investigation last month for another stunt involving a sledgehammer, where he broke two tables in “symbolic” protest against the state government’s alleged inaction over illegal gambling centres.- Mkini
