Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak may have accused the opposition of wanting to lay off civil servants but PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli said it was political appointees that are under the spotlight.
Citing the civil servant positions list under the budget, Rafizi said there were 200 civil servants serving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife alone.
He said this comprises 29 political appointees and private secretaries for the prime minister on top of 112 support staff such as drivers and clerks.
Furthermore, he said Najib gets additional 26 staff members to serve his needs in his capacity as finance minister while his wife, Rosmah Mansor, also gets six staff members.
Rafizi said there were also an additional 27 staff members that tend to the prime minister's residence, bringing the total to 200.
Meanwhile, the deputy prime minister gets 77 staff members to tend to his needs, said Rafizi.
Other senior positions, such as the defence minister, the health minister, the transport minister and the youth and sports minister also get a total of 58 staff members, he added.
"I am confident that civil servants as a whole understand what is happening and would agree with my views," he said.
Rafizi said a Harapan government would reduce the number of staff allocated to a minister, starting with slashing the staff members for the prime minister and his wife from 200 to 77.
He said those who are taken off from serving the prime minister would be redeployed to positions that directly serve the people.
As a whole, Rafizi said he believed the notion that there were too many civil servants was untrue.
This, he said, was due to the difference in the calculation as some benchmark had considered servicemen, police, teachers, lecturers, doctors, and nurses as civil servants even though they were not part of everyday government department operations.
"At this stage, the conclusion that there are too many civil servants relative to population is not accurate.
"But that does not mean that the number of staff in the current organisational form under Najib's administration does not need to be rectified.
"The problem lies with too many staff, footed by the people, do not serve the people but politicians, ministers or are political appointees," he said.
Najib had on Tuesday warned civil servants that they would face a bleak future if the opposition came to power, claiming that they planned to downsize the civil service.- Mkini
